LG Journey Root, Bootloader Unlock, TWRP, Custom ROM l322dl

A few years ago it was possible to root an Android device in one click without a computer. I rooted many LG phones up to Android Lollipop via the Kingroot app. I even rooted LG phones with locked bootloaders such as Tribute 2 & Tribute 5.

However, android security was tightened since Android Marshmallow. I rooted my LG Aristo 2 running on Android 7 using the long rooting procedure. In this method, we need to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery (TWRP) & then flash a root file via TWRP. You can either flash Magisk or SuperSu root.

Let’s follow the same procedure to root our LG Journey LTE smartphone –

To unlock the LG Journey bootloader, we need to enable OEM Unlock and USB Debugging. These 2 settings are found on the Developer Options page.

So, let’s open the Settings app as shown above.

On the settings page, we need to scroll down and select “System”.

Now, choose “Developer Options” on the System page as shown above.

The “Enable OEM unlock” option is turned off. We need to toggle it on.

Tap “Enable OEM unlock” and hit “Enable” to allow OEM unlocking.

The Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) turns off when OEM unlock is enabled.

Now, let’s scroll down and turn on USB Debugging in the same way.

Now, we are ready to connect our LG Journey to the PC via a Micro USB data cable.

A notification reads “USB Debugging connected”. We are good to go.

Let’s wait for the ADB driver installation. It will take a while. The installation status can be checked via the Device Manager.

On my PC the LGE Mobile ADB Interface driver is installed successfully.

Now, we need a Minimal ADB & Fastboot tool for USB Debugging.

I’ve installed this tool on my computer. Let’s run it.

The Minimal ADB & fastboot tool opens the command prompt window.  We are going to use it for bootloader unlocking.

Let’s see if our device is ready for USB debugging on not. To check this let’s type the command

adb devices and hit Enter on the PC keyboard.

The output of the command line is L322DL unauthorized. We need to authorize the connected PC for USB Debugging.

At this stage, please check your LG Journey screen.

There must be an “Allow USB Debugging” prompt on the phone screen. Hit “Allow” to accept this request.

Let’s write the adb devices command once again.

The command line output has changed to L322DL device

Now, we are ready for Bootloader unlocking –

LG Journey Bootloader Unlock

To unlock the LG Journey bootloader, we need to put our phone into Fastboot mode.

The command line for the same is adb reboot bootloader

After writing the above command, the phone simply rebooted to the home screen.

I didn’t get access to the Fastboot mode even after repeated tries.

Let’s try to write another fastboot command adb reboot fastboot

Even this command failed to boot our LG Journey to the Bootloader unlocking screen.

The fastboot mode for bootloader unlock looks like this. This fastboot mode belongs to the LG K30.

The bootloader unlocking command is fastboot oem unlock. Without getting access to the fastboot mode, we cannot unlock the LG Journey bootloader.

The root LG Journey, the first step is to unlock the bootloader. So, as of now, it’s not possible to root an LG Journey smartphone.

LG Journey TWRP Custom Recovery

A custom recovery can be installed only after unlocking the bootloader. With the LG Journey in the locked state, it’s not possible to flash TWRP.

LG Journey Custom ROM / Lineage OS

A custom ROM is in the form of a flashable zip file. It can be flashed via TWRP. As we failed to install TWRP on LG Journey it’s not possible to install a custom ROM such as Lineage OS.

As you’ve enabled USB debugging on your LG Journey, you may like to move apps to SD card as per the below tutorial –
